Maple Hill is an award winning bluegrass band that brings energy, emotion, fun and the lost art of entertainment to their show. Built on the foundation that "it's all about the song", the band delivers powerful vocals with strong supportive instrumental backup rooted in a traditional sound. Maple Hill covers the full range of bluegrass from the early hard-edge blues through gospel and on to today’s great songwriters, including original compositions.
The band is comprised of co-founders Garry Greenland (guitar & vocals) and Pat Moore (bass and vocals), Kevin Golka (mandolin & vocals) and Sean Lundy (banjo). Garry, Pat and Kevin share the lead and harmony vocals, keeping things fresh and interesting throughout the performance. That said, Pat’s unique ability to distinctively “sing-the-story” is always a crowd favourite.
Over these last few years Maple Hill has honed a sound whose foundation is Garry’s solid driving guitar coupled with Kevin’s honkin’ mandolin work - the perfect fit for the bluesy driving rhythm that sets Maple Hill apart from others. Pat’s traditional slap style bass gets both band and audience in a great groove, and Sean’s banjo will bring a smile to hardcore and new bluegrass audiences everywhere.
Heart, drive, deep blues, inspiration, a tight vocal blend, fun filled interplay, and an intimate relationship with the audience are some of the things that describe a Maple Hill performance.
A Little Maple Hill History
"It was 20 Years ago today"...well, it wasn't St. Pepper exactly, but Maple Hill was founded over 20 years ago, playing throughout the Ontario, eastern Quebec, and northern New York State. After winning "Recording of the Year" in 1988, band members moved on to other projects. A veteran of bluegrass, Garry Greenland continued to teach banjo, mandolin, guitar and "band class" to many of the Ottawa area bluegrass enthusiasts, as well as performing with Mike O'Reilly, Dave Nichols and Spare Change, and Hard Ryde. Garry has also been busy with session work, and record production.
Pat Moore picked up the songwriter’s pen and in 2003 recorded her first collection of original songs. Her CD "The Time's Never Been Better" is a collection of roots songs using bluegrass instrumentation, and features Canadian greats Ray Legère, Steve Pitticco, and Bluegrass veterans Dick Smith and Junior Barber. In 2007 Pat was invited to include an original song on the North to Ontario Bluegrass compilation CD produced by Gene Gouthro, and so recorded her song "Lone Pine Standing". Her second full length CD, a collection of mostly original songs written to sound like1950's-60's country pop, came out in 2006. The feedback on both these works has been great!
Maple Hill is proud to be back once again in the bluegrass world carrying on with its original sound and seeking out new musical territory with former member Kevin Golka and our newest member Sean Lundy.
